How it works

Four actions in one capsule

The danger of LDL cholesterol is not just the number: it is the LDL oxidized by free radicals that penetrates the artery walls and forms plaques. That is why Elisir Berberis works on several fronts at once: it lowers LDL, protects it from oxidation, supports the liver that produces and disposes of it, and protects the heart.

Berberine: less LDL, with a mechanism different from statins

Berberine is an alkaloid extracted from barberry (Berberis vulgaris). While statins inhibit cholesterol synthesis, berberine increases the expression of LDL receptors on liver cells, which capture more cholesterol from the blood and dispose of it. It also activates the AMPK pathway, which regulates sugar and lipid metabolism.

Protecting LDL from oxidation

Berberine has direct antioxidant properties, and coenzyme Q10 travels in the blood inside the LDL particles themselves: it is one of the few antioxidants that protects them from the inside.

Milk thistle: the liver at the center

Cholesterol is produced and disposed of in the liver. The silymarin in milk thistle protects liver cells from oxidative stress and stimulates their regeneration: an efficient liver manages the lipid cycle better.

Coenzyme Q10: for the heart, and for those taking statins

Statins inhibit the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is also involved in the production of coenzyme Q10, essential for the energy of heart cells. Q10 was included in the formula with those on statin therapy or GLP-1 agonists in mind as well.

Why no monacolin K

Many “natural” cholesterol supplements use monacolin K from red yeast rice, which is pharmacologically identical to lovastatin — a statin, with the same potential side effects. Elisir Berberis lowers cholesterol with berberine, which works through a different mechanism.

What to expect

Results on cholesterol are measured with blood tests. This progression follows what clinical studies on berberine have reported.

Weeks 1–2
The metabolism adjusts
Berberine activates the AMPK pathway, milk thistle begins its action on the liver, coenzyme Q10 builds up in the tissues. Greater bowel regularity becomes noticeable.
Weeks 3–4
Blood sugar and weight
Studies show a reduction in fasting blood sugar from the fourth week onwards; weight begins to come down slowly and abdominal bloating is reduced.
Weeks 6–8
LDL begins to fall
First significant reduction in LDL cholesterol; total cholesterol and triglycerides fall in parallel.
Weeks 10–12
Time for the blood tests
12-week trials show the maximum reduction in LDL; circulating LDL is less oxidized and the LDL/HDL ratio improves.

Allies at the table

Elisir Berberis also works on its own. Some foods, though, are allies when it comes to cholesterol, and all you have to do is add them.

Oat bran and rolled oats

Beta-glucans bind to bile acids in the intestine and force the liver to produce new ones using cholesterol.

Chia seeds

Omega-3 ALA, soluble fibre and phytosterols: one tablespoon a day in yogurt or a smoothie.

Walnuts

The nuts richest in omega-3 and polyphenols: 30 grams a day, a handful.

To cut down on, without banning

Refined carbohydrates and excess saturated animal fats.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take it if I am on statins?

Coenzyme Q10 was included in the formula with those on statin therapy in mind as well, since statins reduce the body's production of Q10. As with any supplement, if you are undergoing treatment, talk to your doctor first.

Does it contain monacolin K?

No. Monacolin K from red yeast rice is pharmacologically identical to a statin; Elisir Berberis uses berberine, which has a different mechanism.

How is the result measured?

With blood tests before and after the cycle: cholesterol is a number, and studies on berberine indicate the maximum reduction at around 12 weeks.
