How it works
Lysozyme cuts through peptidoglycan, the “cement” that holds the bacterial cell wall together: the bacterium deflates and dies. A mechanism that bacteria cannot get around without losing their viability.
Antibacterial, in the mouth and in the airways
As it dissolves in the mouth it releases the enzyme directly into the saliva, which carries it into the gingival sulcus where the bacteria responsible for gingivitis and bad breath live — gram-positive bacteria, the most vulnerable to lysozyme. The oral mucosa is also the first point of contact with pathogens entering from outside.
Antiviral
Many viruses — influenza, herpes, coronaviruses — are protected by a lipid envelope. Lysozyme attacks that envelope, neutralising the virus before it infects the cells.
Activates the innate defences
It stimulates macrophages and Natural Killer cells, increases neutrophil activity and the production of IgA, the antibodies of the mucous membranes. It also reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α).
Respects the gut flora
It is more effective against pathogenic gram-positive bacteria and less aggressive towards the beneficial gram-negative bacteria of the microbiota: it eliminates the pathogens that compete for space in the colon and lets lactobacilli and bifidobacteria proliferate.
The orodispersible format
The lining of the mouth has a very high absorption capacity: lysozyme enters without passing through the stomach, where acids could partly degrade it, and acts straight away where it is needed — gums, tonsils, throat. No capsules to swallow, for children and for anyone who has difficulty swallowing.
An enzyme the body produces on its own
Lysozyme is an enzyme found in tears, saliva, nasal mucus and breast milk. It was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1922, six years before penicillin, when a tear that fell by chance onto a culture plate killed the bacteria around it. It has also been used for decades as a food preservative (E1105) in cheese-making. Lisozima 500 delivers it in its pure form, extracted from egg white.
